“Unmoored From Her Reflection,” is a contemporary painting by Cecily Brown, 2021. Located at the top of the staircase, the painting unfolds as you look at it. Gender plays an important role in this painting, with the male figures placed in the centre yet their lack of clothing puts them in an weakened, submissive state. The hyper-feminine associations of the harp become the dominant mediator in this composition. Gradually, as each instrumental path begins to cross, harmonies form, but they are often interrupted by abrupt changes in texture. This music—like the painting—does not seek a perfect resolution but rather revels in the beauty of its temporary formations, often through interrupted cadences and extended techniques.
